FORENSIC MEDICINE & TOXICOLOGY

Introduction

The word forensic has been derived from the Latin word “forensis” which implies something pertaining to ‘forum.’ The word ‘forensic’ essentially conveys any issue related to the debate in the court of law. The word ‘medicine’ carries wide important. Broadly, it may be considered as a science for preserving health and effecting cure. From the interaction of these two professions of medicine and law, has emerged the discipline of Forensic Medicine, i.e. application of medical and allied knowledge and expertise towards the administration of justice.

Objective

1. Teaching to the MBBS student as per NMC curriculum
2. To conduct Medicolegal autopsy
3. Clinical forensic medicine work ( Medicolegal injuries report, Medicolegal case opinion, Age estimation civil/criminal, Sexual assault examination)
4. Weapon examination for frame the Medicolegal opinion of physical assault cases
5. Academic research work
6. The department gives teaching/ training to Medical Officers, Police Officers of the State when demanded

Facilities

Various weapons, poisons, slides, radiological specimens, Photographs showing injuries, soft tissue specimens, Bone/Osteology specimens etc.
On an average 1-2 autopsies are carried out every day in the Departmental mortuary. Students are taken to mortuary for demonstrations. Three deep freezers with 3body capacity respectively, ice box and other essential equipment's are available in the mortuary. Doctor’s room, Viscera room and waiting hall are also made.
60-65 person sitting capacity room where regular seminars and tutorials are organised for the students.

Achivements

1. The department conducts about more than 400 medicolegal autopsies and 50 expert opinion cases per year.
2. The department has all facilities required for teaching to M.B.B.S. students and for conduction of medico legal autopsies. Letter of requisition for specimen has been submitted to the authority for established museum

Symposium & Seminar

The department gives teaching/ training to Medical Officers, Police Officers of the State when demanded. Department also conducted Seminars for UG students.
